PSHE

Intent

At St Peters Catholic Primary School, we believe that personal, social and health education (PSHE) enables our children to become healthy, safe, independent and responsible members of society. It aims to help them understand how they are developing personally and socially, and tackles many of the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up.

We are committed to ensuring that St Peter’s is a happy, stimulating, and caring environment, where high standards of behaviour and good manners are expected throughout the school. Pupils’ behaviour and attitudes to learning are guided by our school values, which are embedded in the curriculum through PSHE lessons, making them central to the success of the whole school.

Our school council plays a vital role in promoting these rules and values, as well as organising fundraising events for local charities. By doing so, they set a positive example for all pupils to follow and aspire to. PSHE is at the heart of our school ethos, shaping both personal development and the wider school community.

We are also committed to supporting the mental health and wellbeing of all pupils at St Peters.

Implementation

The PSHE curriculum is designed to enhance the pastoral education of our pupils, which is so important, as well as the academic outcomes that the school aims for.

At St Peter's, PSHE is taught through explicit lessons and is also embedded throughout other areas of the curriculum and daily school life. In addition, our PSHE provision is enriched by carefully planned themed days across the school year, giving the children opportunities to explore and reflect on important topics.

We encourage our children to take on a wide range of practical roles and responsibilities that promote active citizenship, such as peer buddies, reading buddies, school councillors, class monitors, and by engaging in both school and local events.

Our pupils also have the opportunity to meet and work with members of the wider community, including health professionals, firefighters, police officers, sports coaches, secondary school pupils, artists, and representatives from the Parish church.

We actively participate in and promote national events such as International Day of Peace, Anti-Bullying Week, Mental Health Awareness Week, Safer Internet Day, and Universal Children’s Rights Day.

Impact

-          Children will recognise and appreciate the British Values of democracy, tolerance, mutual respect, rule of law and liberty.

-          They will also understand how to develop positive and healthy relationships with their peers both now and in the future.

-          They will be aware of how to show respect for themselves and others, which is reinforced throughout the school day with reference to our whole school rules.

-          Pupils at St Peter’s will be equipped with the skills and qualities to tackle modern issues with respect and tolerance for individuals of all backgrounds.

myHappymind

We are so excited to be using myHappymind! It is a science- backed programme that is grounded in the latest science and research about what it takes to create positive wellbeing.

It’s taught to every single child in our school and there’s a curriculum for every year group from Early Years to Year 6. myHappymind is taught across five modules and each introduces a new set of content and habits to help children build resilience, self-esteem and confidence: meet your brain, celebrate, appreciate, relate and engage.
